Twenty dragons, from friendly little hatchlings to full-winged fire-breathers. Scales, spines and wing membranes give plenty of structure to colour without becoming fiddly.
Dragons split two audiences that want opposite things: a small child wants a round friendly dragon, and an eight year old wants scales, spines and fire. This set leans friendly, a dragon reading a book, one standing peacefully beside a knight, one minding three hatchlings, with the horned and scaled end kept for a handful of designs.
Ways to use these
- Sort by age before printing. The chunky ones (1, 8, 11, 18) suit four to six. The horned close up portrait (6) and the treasure hoard (5) reward the patience of an eight or nine year old.
- Scales take a second color. Coloring each scale a slightly different shade is the trick that makes a finished dragon page look finished.
- Pairs with a reading session. A dragon page after a dragon chapter book gives a child somewhere to put the picture in their head.
Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Frequently asked questions
Are these frightening?
No. There is no blood, no menace and nothing being harmed. Even the design with a knight in it has the two of them standing side by side.
Western or eastern dragons?
Almost all western: four legs, bat wings, horned head. Number 7 is the long serpentine eastern kind, which is noticeably harder and better suited to an older child.
Do any breathe fire?
One does, number 4, and the flame is drawn as closed shapes rather than a scribble so it can actually be colored in. Number 12 is asleep with smoke curling from its nostrils.
