20 Free Printable Butterfly Coloring Pages
Twenty butterflies with symmetrical patterned wings, the natural mirror symmetry makes them ideal for practising matching colours on both sides.
Butterflies are the rare subject where symmetry is the point. The wings on the top down designs are drawn as matching enclosed cells, so a child can mirror a color scheme from one side to the other, which is a real and satisfying constraint rather than free coloring.
Ways to use these
- Color one wing, then copy it. Doing the left wing first and matching the right is genuinely absorbing and produces the best looking finished pages on the site.
- Cut out and hang. The bolder silhouettes cut out cleanly. Thread them on cotton and they turn into a window mobile.
- Pairs with a life cycle lesson. Two designs cover the change: a caterpillar on a leaf beside a butterfly (6) and one emerging from a chrysalis (12). They slot straight into the standard primary science unit.
Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Ordinary copier paper is fine for crayons and pencils; use cardstock or slip a spare sheet underneath for markers. Free to print at home, in a classroom or in a library, see the license.
Frequently asked questions
Are the wing patterns symmetrical?
On the top down views, yes, and that is what makes the mirror coloring exercise work. Three designs deliberately break it: the side view with wings raised (5), the one viewed from below with wings folded (20) and the one resting on an open hand (9).
Are real species shown?
Two are recognisable: a monarch style with bold vein patterns (11) and a swallowtail with long wing points (7). The rest are invented patterns, because a pattern only needs to be beautiful and enclosed, not taxonomically correct.
Are these detailed enough for an adult?
Four are, roughly the difficulty of a simple mandala: the geometric triangles (15), the spirals (16), the flower filled wings (13) and the circles and teardrops (4).
